Background:Yuta was never a conformist. After graduating a prestigious school of design, he went to work for a popular street-wear brand in Tokyo’s trendy Daikanyama district. He was expecting both to learn from his supervisors and to exercise his creative talent. However, he was surprised to find the company simply wanted him to follow the rules and do the clothing designs they instructed him to do. After a year, he felt stressed and frustrated. So he quit and spent a year backpacking the world. During that time, he would spend long hours of travel sketching his designs on an iPad. He showed them to others, and even though he spoke little English, he found his clothing started conversation. Many people asked him how they could buy it. When he got back to Tokyo he rented a small shared workspace, found a production partner, and started producing his own line of Yuta Saints t-shirts and caps, and selling them online and posting his designs on Instagram. His items created a buzz and widely shared sold well and he started to get inquiries in English. It seems word spreads fast on social media. He quickly scaled up and soon had his own small shop and a couple of part-time staff to help fill orders. He’s now ready to start selling his designs to overseas customers. He’s sure the demand will be immediate. Yet his English is limited. He also knows the busy, text-heavy style of Japanese sites such as Rakuten is not popular among Westerners. He wants to do it right.
