Resumes and CVs are tricky. Employers have preferences and there are huge amounts of so-called experts giving out bad advice. WorldEdits’ owner is the only native-English-speaking Certified Professional Resume Writer (CPRW) in Japan, and one of the very few living outside the United States.
These days, anyone can find a resume or CV template in their word processing software and various online sources. These offer very different styles and approaches. Who should you trust? That’s up to you, but we recommend you trust a professional. A CPRW is rigorously tested and verified as having modern and high-level resume-writing skills.
For non-native speakers of English, the most common approach is to write your own resume. Some of these people then have a friend or a cheap service “proofread” it. Then they send it to many companies or universities. Two big problems here are: (1) the friend or amateur proofreader does not know you or what your goals are, (2) a resume (and cover letter) should be customized every single time you apply for a new job or school.
It goes without saying that it should also be properly formatted, phrased, structured, and 100% free of language errors.
Moreover, a resume and a CV are not the same thing. The style differs not only by country but also by job type and career level. Resumes are summarized versions of your work history, accomplishments, and skills. They are generally the most common document requested from applicants in job applications. The shorter, sharper style of a resume is based on a more US-style approach. CVs, meanwhile, are written longer with more detailed and personal information. These represent a UK and European approach. Note also that academics in any country often need a CV rather than resume, and these also take on a different approach, emphasizing research and publications.
So if you’re applying to an international company, for an internship or job abroad, or for a foreign university, it’s quite likely you’ll need a resume or CV.
And let’s not overlook LinkedIn and other online networking and recruiting sites. Your LinkedIn page is something like an electronic fusion of a resume, CV, and personal homepage. A photo and certain personal information is expected, and you can add qualifications and solicit testimonials. Unlike a resume or CV, there are fewer gold-standard techniques, but there are ways to make it shine. It’s been our experience that few non-native English speakers know where to get started with LinkedIn, and they almost always overlook the need, again, for perfect English. LinkedIn is massively powerful in helping you find your dream job. We’ll make you shine online.
Our English editing and proofreading services, and CPRW-specialized resume revision and creation services will ensure that you will have the appropriate version that you need depending on you location and desired use.
We work closely with you to ensure that your grammar and spelling are correct while the formatting is appropriately modern. We will find where you are heading in life and then infuse your resume or CV with the right tone and with keywords that HR directors and computerized screening programs alike will find attractive.
